James was named after his Father and the small town of Marston in Bedfordshire, England where his grandfather, William Harris, was born and raised. He was an avid athlete as a young man and remained active throughout his lifetime.
James played professional football with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 1935 season. The Blue Bombers won their first Grey Cup during the 1935 season. He also served with the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Army throughout WW#2.
James married Georgina Playfair Mackechnie on 18 Apr 1936. The marriage ended in separation in 1963.
