Joan Margaret Harris

   Cause of her death was Pancreatic Cancer.

  General Information:

Joan was born and raised in Winnipeg apart from 3 years studying at the University of Toronto. History was her main subject. She then switched to Child Studies.

In 1948 Joan travelled to Britain with her cousin, Eileen Richardson Harris, the daughter of James Harris. It was then that she met and married Duncan Macrae.

Joan and Duncan have five children and ten grandchildren to date (2005).

For many years (over 30) Joan researched and archived key historical information on the Harris family and many other related names that are part of the Harris family as a whole. She largely focused her research on the Bedfordshire and Kent roots of the family - taking us back to before 1700.

Her research and discoveries of the Harris family, especially key information related to the Barnard and Richardson family lines, has been fully utilized and is still the largest part of the current history project information prior to 1900. Joan eagerly shared her discoveries with all who requested and anyone that asked. Her years of hard work and effort on the family's behalf does not go without due recognition.

Joan was also an active part of her community and a devoted wife, mother, friend, sister, daughter, grandmother and great-grandmother.

The following excerpt is taken from the email sent by Joan's family on August 13, 2006 to inform all of her death on that day.

Dear All,

I am sorry to have to report the sad news of Mum's death at about 5:45 this evening, Sunday August 13. The nurses had just visited. Mum passed away peacefully and quickly, with a little sigh. Her whole final 24 hours seemed quietly contented. She retained her dignity to the end.

The local minister came out to see us and read part of psalms 16, 23 and 121 by the bedside followed by a short prayer. It all felt very appropriate. We have drunk a toast to Mum round the fire and thank you all for your support and good wishes over the past months. We are seeing the funeral director tomorrow and will pass on details of funeral as known. Dad remains as strong as ever.

Joan married Doctor Duncan James Macrae, son of Doctor Duncan Macrae and Unknown, on 2 Jun 1951 in Crescent Fort Rouge Church, Winnipeg, Manitoba. (Doctor Duncan James Macrae was born on 4 Nov 1914 in Balmacara, Rosshire, Scotland, died on 15 May 2007 in Gairloch, West Ross., Scotland and was buried on 11 Jun 2007 in Balmacara New Burial Ground, Scotland.) The cause of his death was Congestive Heart Failure.
