Death County: Dunbarton, Ernestown Township, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario
Research Information:
The 1851 Census states that he was a Blacksmith by trade. John is mentioned as such in the "Ontario Directory" of 1869-70 under the Brooklin section. This Directory is available for email in John's archive upon request.
John, his wife Almira, his son James and his daughter Olive are all buried in Groveside Cemetery - located in Brooklin, Ontario. All four of them share the same headstone. At the base of the headstone is the following inscription:
"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord"
Documents show that John was active in the Canadian Military (under British/Scottish companies) from 1834-1847 (when he is listed as discharged) and he appears again as a York Ranger for one week in 1880. He appears to have served in Pickering, Penetanguishene, Toronto and also as a Highlander. It seems that he never attained any rank above Private.
His steady and known regiment from 1834-1847 was the 46th Foot Soldiers.
It is apparent that John was illiterate - his signature was always an "x" on all of his military documents.
John married Almira Dewey in 1844. (Almira Dewey was born in 1820 in Ireland, died in Mar 1880 in Brooklin, Ontario and was buried in Mar 1880 in Groveside Cemetery, Brooklin, Ontario.)
